This Privacy Policy explains how Leafline ("the App", "we", "us", or "our") handles information when you use our mobile application on iOS and Android.
Leafline is a houseplant watering-reminder app built to be offline-first. Our guiding principle is simple: your plant data stays on your device, and we collect as little information as possible.
This policy is provided by Nikola Kretschmer ("the developer"), based in Lower Saxony, Germany.
1. Summary (the short version)
- Leafline works fully offline with no account. You do not sign in, and we do not create a profile for you.
- Your plants, watering schedules, care history, and settings are stored locally on your device, not on our servers.
- The only time data leaves your device is when you use the optional Photo Plant Identification feature (a paid feature). When you do, the photo you choose is sent to a third-party identification service to recognize the plant species.
- Purchases (the one-time lifetime unlock) are processed by the Apple App Store / Google Play and our purchase-management provider, RevenueCat. We never see or store your payment details.
- We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising.
2. Information stored on your device
The following information is created and stored locally on your device and is never transmitted to us:
- Plant records — names, chosen species, location/room, and any notes or settings you add.
- Care history — watering, fertilizing, and repotting events you log.
- Schedule data — watering intervals and derived due dates.
- App settings — such as your hemisphere/location preference, notification time, and away/vacation mode.
- Plant photos you attach — any photos you associate with a plant are stored in the App's local storage on your device.
Because this data lives on your device, it is removed when you delete the App (subject to your device's backup settings — see Section 7).
3. Photo Plant Identification (optional, paid feature)
If you use the Photo Identification feature to identify a plant from a photo:
- The image you capture or select is transmitted, over an encrypted connection, to a proxy service we operate, which forwards it to Google's Gemini API to determine the likely species.
- The identification result (candidate species and related metadata) is returned to your device and cached locally to avoid repeat requests.
- We do not attach your identity to these requests. We do not maintain user accounts, so images are not linked to a personal profile.
- Photos are used only for species identification — never for watering decisions or any other automated profiling.
Google processes the image under its own terms. Please review Google's policies for details on its handling and retention of submitted images:
- Google Privacy Policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
- Gemini API Additional Terms of Service: https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/terms
Google's use and retention of submitted images are governed by the Gemini API terms in force for our account. This feature is not available on the free tier and is never triggered automatically. Identification requests only occur when you explicitly choose to identify a plant by photo.
4. Purchases and monetization
Leafline offers a single one-time (non-consumable) lifetime unlock. There are no subscriptions.
- Payment is handled entirely by the Apple App Store or Google Play. We do not receive or store your credit card number or payment credentials.
- We use RevenueCat to manage and validate purchase entitlements and to support Restore Purchases. RevenueCat may process an anonymized app-user identifier and receipt/transaction information to determine whether you have unlocked premium features.
- For more information, see RevenueCat's privacy policy: https://www.revenuecat.com/privacy/ and the store's respective policies (Apple, Google).
5. Permissions we may request
Leafline requests device permissions only to provide specific features. You can grant or deny these, and change them later in your device settings:
| Permission | Why it is used |
|---|---|
| Camera | To take a photo for plant identification. |
| Photos / Photo Library | To let you pick an existing photo for identification or to attach to a plant. |
| Notifications | To send local "check and water if dry" reminders. These reminders are scheduled on your device and are not sent from our servers. |
Denying a permission only disables the related feature; the rest of the App continues to work.
6. Information we do NOT collect
To be explicit, Leafline does not:
- Require an account, email address, or login.
- Collect your name, contacts, precise GPS location, or device identifiers for tracking.
- Include third-party advertising or advertising SDKs.
- Sell or rent your personal information to anyone.
7. Data retention and deletion
- Because your data is stored locally, you can delete it at any time by removing plants and care events in the App, or by uninstalling the App.
- If you use device or cloud backups (e.g., iCloud, Google backup), your App data may be included in those backups under the terms of your device/OS provider. We do not control those backups.
- Cached photo-identification results stored on your device are removed when you clear the App's data or uninstall it.
8. Children's privacy
Leafline is not directed to children under the age of 13 (or the minimum age required in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because the App does not collect personal data through accounts, no personal profile is created for any user.
9. Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example, under the GDPR in the EU/UK or the CCPA/CPRA in California), you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal information about you. Since Leafline stores your data locally and does not maintain user accounts:
- You can exercise access and deletion directly within the App and by uninstalling it.
- For questions about data processed by our photo-identification proxy or by RevenueCat, contact us using the details below and we will assist where we are able.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top. Material changes will be reflected in an updated App release. Your continued use of the App after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
